Look What's Happening at the Historical Society!!

Deadline:  April 5, 2024

The Southport Historical Society offers a $2,000 academic scholarship to a South Brunswick High School graduating senior to continue their education at an accredited college or university.  One thousand dollars ($1,000) will be paid in each of the first two years of enrollment.  Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA to be eligible for the award the second year.  Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the college or university after full-time enrollment is verified.

Applications must be postmarked no later than April 5, 2024. Students must meet the following requirements:

  • Acceptance for full-time enrollment in an accredited 2 or 4 year college or university.
  • Apply for the scholarship during the senior year at South Brunswick High School.
  • Fully complete the scholarship application form.
  • Choose one of the topics below; submit with the application an original essay containing at least 900 words.
  • Be sure to include a bibliography of all materials used including any interviews conducted.

2024 Essay Topics

  1. The History of Ft. Johnston and its relevance during the Civil War
    – Students who are interested in writing an essay on Ft. Johnston can request a free copy of “The History of Ft. Johnston” at the Ft. Johnston Visitor’s Center
  2. History of Southport’s Waterfront and those who worked on the water

The Recipient of the Susan Sellers Carson scholarship will be chosen based on their efforts in writing a comprehensive, insightful, and original essay about one of the topics offered above.  The Scholarship Committee looks forward to reviewing your application – Good luck!

 

April 8th –  Rice Creek Tour

Governor George BurringtonTwice Hired and Twice Fired.
George Burrington was first appointed to be the Proprietary Governor of North Carolina in 1724 and 1725.  Then in 1730, he was appointed as the colony’s first Royal Governor  And while, Burrington has the distinction of being twice appointed governor, he also has the distinction of being twice fired from his post. Join us as we paddle and explore Rice Creek and the story of how Governor Burrington earned the distinction of being twice hired and twice fired as governor of the Province of North Carolina.

Fees:  $65.00 includes- basic kayak instruction, use of kayak, paddle, lifejacket and guided kayak tour.
Bring your own boat and gear tour fee $40.00 SHS Members receive a $5.00 discount.

Question About the Commemorative Bricks?

Commemorative Bricks will be placed at Ft. Johnston by Memorial Day. The exact date is dependent on a variety of factors: when the bricks arrive, when volunteers and city employees can install them and weather conditions. If you purchased a brick, we will send you an email when the bricks are installed. If you would like to purchae a brick, sales re-open October 1st.
