Sept 11th – Cannon THOR firing in honor victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. The program will begin at 8:45 am at Fort Johnston lawn.
Sept. 12th – Second Tuesday Talk with SHS board member Bob Hagerman. Bob will detail the short history of Wilmington, Brunswick and Southern railroad, which once had a station at the NW corner of Rhett and Moore streets. The program will begin at 10:30 am at the Harper Library.
Sept. 28th – General Meeting. The meeting will include members of the Wooden Boat Show. The speaker will be local boat builder Dean Dosher. The potluck dinner will begin at 6:30 and speaker at 7:00 pm. The location will be at the Southport Community Building.
Oct. 10th – Second Tuesday Talk with the Co-chair of the Southport Forestry Commission and SHS board member, Scott Len. Scott’s talk will be about history of “Southport’s Trees”. The program will begin at 10:30 am at the Harper Library.
Oct. 28th – “Living Voices of the Past” “Living Voices of the Past” – Society members will don period attire to tell the stories of some of the people interred in the Old Smithville Burying Ground. Presentations will be from 2:00 to 3:00 pm.
Nov. 14th – Second Tuesday Talk with SHS member Rick Pukenas. Rick will speak about the myths of celebrated writer Robert C. Ruark, Jr. The program will begin at 10:30 am at the Harper Library.
Nov. 16th – General Meeting. Speaker to be announced. The potluck dinner will begin at 6:30 and speaker at 7:00 pm. The location will be the Southport Community Building.
Dec. 9th – Christmas Tour of Homes. From 2:00 to 7:00 pm.
Dec. 12th – Second Tuesday Talk with SHS vice-president Pat Kirkman Pat will speak about the establishment of Smithville on December 31, 1792.
Dec. 31st – Southport’s 225 year Anniversary Celebration from 2 – 5 pm at the Fort Johnston – Southport Visitor’s Center and Museum

General membership meetings are held on the fourth Thursday night of January, March, May and September and on the third Thursday night of November. The meetings include an interesting history related program.

The executive board meets on the third Thursday of each month except November when we meet on the second Thursday. The meetings are open to all society members and we invite your participation and input. Please let the president know if you would like to attend and have an issue for the agenda.
Book signings, lectures, walking tours, student programs and other events are also sponsored by the society.
